Oroszországi TULA városa volt a központja e tecnikának, ezért a niellót más néven TULAEZÜST-nek is nevezik. Cellini elevenítette fel ezt a régi ötvös díszítőtechnikát. Az évszázadok során feledésbe merült és napjainkban újra reneszánszát éli.
